Rodrigo’s voice really shines through with short runs, and more belting, and head voice at the end. This song is one of my favorites, as I am more of a ballad girl, but one this that peeves me about this is in the bridge she sings “God I wish that you had thought this through, before I went and fell in love with you” but when she says with she sings a ch sound directly into the you, so it’s more like a wichu, which in my opinion doesn’t fit the tone of the song. “Guess you didn’t cheat, but you’re still a traitor.” The song is closer to a ballad but not just a piano and her voice, there’s a guitar and some produced instruments. There are probably a million songs about cheating out there, but Rodrigo distinguishes this one as not cheating, but betrayal. The first of a couple breakup songs on the album, it takes a new stance on cheating. One thing that was missing for me was a harder hitting last chorus after she does a quieter bridge again, just to drive it home. The beat and lyrics make me want to head bob along and scream the lyrics at the top of my lungs. As it is the first track on the album, most artists like to open strong with a more upbeat song compared to a ballad, and this follows that trend. God, it’s brutal out here.” In fan rankings, brutal is never very high, however, I think it is quite relatable to teen struggles and realities. “They say these are the golden years, but I wish I could disappear, ego-crush is so severe. The lyrics are focused around being a teenager and not getting the stereotypical teenage dream. ![]() The song is written in 7 beats opposed to the usual 8, which is why I think the songs sound similar. The higher pitched yelling and both of them not accentuating their constandants, specifically the -re. When I first heard the chorus, it made me think of the bridge in Sheryl Crow’s ‘Soak Up the Sun’. It features a rock beat with more of alto notes in the verses, while the chorus is near yelling. Six songs out of the eleven are explicit. It’s in the pop and alt pop genre, centering on adolescence and heartbreak. The album was produced by Dan Nigro, co-written by Nigro and Rodrigo and released via Geffen Records. 18 year old Olivia Rodrigo first topped charts with ‘drivers license’, followed by ‘deja vu’ and finally ‘good 4 u’ before releasing the full album. Eleven songs spanning 34 minutes and 46 seconds, SOUR made headlines when it was released on May 21, 2021. Peace and love to all.A Disney star’s debut album following three hit singles. ![]() I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. In these times we live in this is hardly news. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. ![]() “How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. And no more was to be said about it,” Petty continued. “The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Two high-profile situations that were settled out of court include Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ 2014 hit “Uptown Funk” (which has quietly added writers twice) and Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me,” the writers of which in 2015 made an undisclosed settlement with Tom Petty over their song’s similarity to his 1989 hit “I Won’t Back Down.” Petty and cowriter Jeff Lynne’s names were added to Smith’s song’s credits and royalties, even though the writers claimed not to be previously familiar with the earlier tune.Īfter news of the addition became public, Petty wrote in a statement, “Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. Such cases can get extremely complicated, unpredictable and, not least, expensive when they go before a jury of ordinary people who are not music experts, as evidenced by the back-and-forth with recent lawsuits involving Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” Robin Thicke and Pharrell’s “Blurred Lines” and even Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” Reps for Swift and Rodrigo did not immediately respond to Variety’s requests for comment, but what seems likely is that the matter was settled quietly behind the scenes, as is often the situation with potential copyright-infringement cases.
